Topical medications can be used for a number of things. They are most commonly used for flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, or to treat and control certain intestinal parasites. Applying this medication can be done in 3 simple steps! Before applying any topical medication, you should always make sure you are using the correct one. You should never use prevention that was made for a dog on a cat and vice versa. Check the dosage to make sure it is also correct, they are typically dosed by weight.
Step 1
Prepare your medication. Some medications will come in a tube with a cap that you have to push down to break the seal and then remove the cap. Some will come in a syringe where you will slightly pull back on the plunger (moveable part of the syringe) and twist the cap off.
Step 2
Separate the fur at the nape of the neck (on the back between the shoulder blades) until you can see your pet’s skin. This is the recommended spot to give almost all topical medications because your cat cannot reach that area to lick it off.
Step 3
Apply the entire contents of the tube or syringe to the skin where you parted the fur. Do not bathe your pet 2 days before or after applying and avoid petting that area.
